Physical Activity Policy Physical activity is vital for everyone, especially young children. It plays an important role in children’s physical development and overall health.
Our setting environment, both indoors and outdoors, is set up to encourage children to be physically active. We have free flow outdoor play, and an outdoor area. The garden has equipment to support children’s physical development. There is also equipment indoors to support physical activity, such as slides and wooden blocks. We also promote physical activity as part of our Forest/Beach/Nature School provisions, encouraging children to engage in physical activity outdoors and in nature. Our outdoor School sessions often involve outings to local green spaces, and children are encouraged to walk to these, although we do take pushchairs for younger children if needed. We aim to encourage children to take part in structured and unstructured physical activity regularly throughout the day. Current recommendations are that children under 5 should engage in at least 180 minutes of physical activity every day – this could be tummy time, crawling around, cruising along furniture, running, climbing trees, or more. As part of our efforts to work in partnership with parents, we also regularly share information about physical activity and outdoor activity with parents via our Facebook group. This is intended to encourage children to engage in physical activity at home, as well as at the setting.
