English as an Additional Language (EAL) PolicyAt Wild Monkeys Childcare Ltd, we value diversity, including diversity of language. We recognise that many children joining our setting may have a home language other than English. This policy is intended to outline how we help children with EAL to reach their full potential, whilst also supporting their home language and culture.
When a child joins the nursery, we ask that the parent records their home language, ethnicity, and religion in the sign-up pack. We then create a choice board for the child, featuring pictures and words in both English and their home language. This will be given to the child’s key person. The key person will then use this board to help communication with the child. We also request that the parent provides us with a list of key words/phrases and how to pronounce them. This is so that we can make the child feel as at home as possible, particularly during the settling-in period. We also make sure that we have books of the child’s home language available for them to look at in the setting and send one home for them to share with Parent/Carer. The parent/carer is invited in to read to the children in their home language too. During a child’s time at Wild Monkeys Childcare Ltd, we encourage increasing use of English, in line with Ofsted and EYFS guidelines. We also include the child’s home language and celebrations from any religion they may follow in our planning and curriculum.
