Fire and Emergency Evacuation ProcedureFire Prevention
At Wild Monkeys Childcare Ltd, we have a fire alarm system which includes smoke alarms, heat alarms, call points, and emergency lighting. Every door in the building is a fire door, and all except the outside doors and the bathroom doors are self-closing. This means that, in the event of a fire being detected, the doors will close automatically to prevent the spread of fire. The doors close slowly to avoid risk to children, and can be opened manually by adults. There are fire extinguishers (water and carbon dioxide) at either end of the ground floor, and a fire blanket conforming to British standards in the kitchen. A map of the escape route and the fire system layout is available in the front playroom, next to the fire alarm controls. The fire alarm system is tested regularly, and staff are trained in how to handle testing and false alarms. Furnishings and toys comply with appropriate British standards and legal requirements, and only fitted radiators are used to heat the building. All electrical appliances belonging to the nursery have been PAT tested, and we have a policy addressing the use of staff’s own electrical appliances. The boiler is serviced yearly. Fire Evacuation Procedure In the event of a fire, the first priority will be the safe evacuation of children. The alarm system is expected to alert everyone in the building to the fire; if it does not, or a staff member sees the fire first, the call points should be used to manually trigger the alarm. If it is dark, emergency lighting will ensure visibility. The Manager or Deputy Manager will collect the attendance and visitor registers, and confirm that the property is clear. Staff should guide children to the fire exit. In the first instance, this will be one of the rear patio doors, depending on the location of the fire and the location of children and staff. A secondary escape route is available via the front door. If the fire blocks access to all escape routes, staff and children should remain in a room with the fire door closed, open a window, and call for help. Depending on the age of children, it may be possible to exit through a window. After exiting the building, staff and children should make their way to the assembly point at the bottom of the garden. If possible, the fire brigade will be called. There will be a roll call of all staff, children, and visitors. Parents will be notified as per the Accidents, Incidents, and Emergencies Policy, and staff, children, and visitors will not re-enter the building until they have clearance from the appropriate authorities. Emergency Evacuation In the event of an emergency other than fire which requires evacuation, such as a threat to the nursery, a gas leak, or other issue, the procedure above should be followed. Staff, children, and visitors should assemble at the bottom of the garden, and roll call should be taken. Activating the fire alarm system may be helpful to ensure all persons in the building evacuate, depending on the reason for evacuation; however, this will not generally be necessary. Nature Setting In the event of an emergency, the staff and children at Nature exit through the bottom left or right-hand side fire doors on the right hand side of the building then meet on the field behind the nursery. Beach Setting In the event of an emergency, the staff and children at Beach exit through the committee room fire door on the right hand side of the building and meet by the garage next to the nursery, unless the fire is that side then we meet round the other side of the garden.
